Performance Based Navigation
The rules for trainee and qualified pilots about Performance Based Navigation training are changing.
Commission Regulation (EU) No. 539/2016 Performance Based Navigation (PBN) amends Commission Regulation (EU) No. 1178/2011 (the Aircrew Regulation). It requires that from 25 August 2018, pilots may fly in accordance with PBN routes and procedures provided that they have a PBN privileges endorsement to their Instrument Rating (IR). From 25 August 2020 all pilots must have a PBN privileges endorsement to their IR or En-route Instrument Rating (EIR).
To meet this training need we recently launched an interactive iBook manual teaching the PBN theory requirement. The PBN iBook is for current or recent ATPL students who have not yet passed the PBN version of the ATPL Radio Navigation examination – and for any pilots who require the PBN endorsement on their licence.
Some Approved Training Organisations have already adopted PBN into their approved training syllabus, and their trainee pilots are therefore entitled to take the new ATPL Radio Navigation examination. This means their IR will be suitably endorsed automatically. Padpilot’s ATPL(A) Radio Navigation iBook has included the chapters needed for the PBN syllabus for the past year, so Padpilot partner schools have been entering their students for the newer PBN version of ATPL Radio Navigation this year – and the latest version of the Padpilot ATPL Radio Nav iBook (2.12) includes updates based on recent exam feedback. Therefore, anyone who already owns the Padpilot ATPL(A) Radio Navigation iBook, does NOT need to purchase this new PBN iBook.
Trainee pilots who have taken an EASA ATPL(A) Radio Navigation exam which did not examine PBN knowledge will need to sit a supplemental PBN examination at a later date to gain a PBN privileges endorsement to their Instrument Rating (IR) or En-route Instrument Rating (EIR).
This new iBook contains all the knowledge required for the PBN endorsement and the supplemental PBN examination. The text, as always, is straightforward and easy to read while the interactive study features, illustrations and videos bring PBN theory to life, aiding understanding and memory retention.
The PBN iBook costs £19.99 and is available to download from iTunes now. Read a sample chapter here
